Bernina Club Day 16th November 2011

What a wonderful day we all had at the Club day today. This month we had three birthdays to celebrate!!
including a big 70th birthday.I  brought along my special Home made Vanilla and Chocolate Cake with lots of lovely creamy icing on top. It always goes down well!!! We had several new members too. they all enjoyed it very much and can't wait for next month.
Laine, one of our regular member talked about Foundation Piecing, she had made lots of samples and kits up too. Very interesting indeed and thank you Laine well done.
Laine makes wonderful quilts, and bags and is always willing to share her work with the group.
Anne, who does wonderful digitizing amongst other things, showed us some of her work too.

Over coffee and cakes, we all sang happy birthday and gave out birthday cards. Davina and Myself (who run the club) thanked everyone for attending and supporting the club over the last year. Those that took the time to prepare and do a little talk throughout the year were given a little gift as a token of our appreciation in making the group so successful. Many thanks to all the members who attend regularly to support each other.
we are very lucky to have such  vibrant talent members in the group who are willing to show and tell, and share their textile/sewing skills, good and bad for the good of others.

Here are some examples of Foundation Piecing. I am sure you will agree they look great.

Bernina Bonanza Event

I have been busy delivering sewing classes. Having lots of fun sharing sewing skills with others.
At  West End Sewing Centre in Cheltenham we had a 'full house' for the Creative Overlocking Course.
Everyone had a good time, making flatlocking stitching, rolled hems, lettuce edges, adding lace and beads, stitching with wire. Just how versatile the Overlocker can be is amazing!!!

Today's workshop - Creative Ways with Bias, went down very well indeed. Creating  your own trimmings to match your garments, or soft furnishing, just  make your projects individual and unique.
Using a Rotary Cutter, board, and Cutting Rulers, Everyone made their own bias, piping, corded inserts, flat soft hem edges, bias ruffles and much more  in many sizes with all sorts of fabrics-
- navy strip look so different when cut on the cross- !!
Bet you didn't know you could do so much with Bias!

At my regular evening sewing workshops at Karen's Studio in Coventry the students have been busy getting to grips with patchwork squares, finding out how to turn up smart trousers, making a fitted bodice with a sweetheart neckline and a lovely draping skirt to match - made in beautiful Indian  Design hand woven silk fabric and learning new mixed media techniques. As usual everyone enjoyed a cup of tea and homemade cake as well.

Bernina Club Day September 2011

We had a great time at this months Bernina Club day which takes place at West End Sewing Centre. Cheltenham. As usual it was very well attended. One of the Group Members - Helen - gave a lovely talk about creating pictures with a difference using lots of fabric shapes and colours schemes and then sewing them together to create lovely 'happy villages' one of her designs entitled 'Bethlehem' as very intriguing and so lovely that she photographed it then used the picture to make last years Christmas cards - what a lovely idea.!!! Helen showed us some of the work she has created. The pictures are very different. Here are some pictures taken at the club today.  Well done Helen. While we all enjoyed coffee and biscuits, a few members had brought in their work to show and  share experiences with the group. Including  Bags, Jackets, and Mini Jester Bags. A friendly welcome to our three new members too. I demonstrated how to couch all sorts of threads, thin ribbons, wools and strips of organza using the special Bernina Couching foot ( no. 43). It is so easy as you can guide your cords through the channel in the side of the foot so you  don't need to worry about placing the cords in the correct place you can just stitch with ease and concentrate on creating the design.
the next meeting is in a months time on the  19th October 10am till 12. All Bernina Owners are welcome to come along and enjoy the morning and meet new friends.

Sewing With Friends

I met up with my friend Anne Today and We had a  fun day today sharing our love of all things sewing related.
We worked out how to make a lovely 'jester bag' that would make a really nice gift for Christmas
Anne had  made a lovely bag from pattern we were shown at last months Bernina Club Day. Very easy pattern and the bag looked great.

Together we worked through the problem of using invisible thread and  3 thread overlocking!!! We did get it to work eventually!! samples looked great,  but.... the thread is that 'springy' it kept snapping. The weight of thread to light needs a stronger thread. all tensions to virtually nil, spools need thread nets on and even then still not coming of cones evenly. Works better on the Baby lock machine than Husqvana - Conclusion - Don't use invisible thread on overlockers!!! lol

It was a lovely sunny afternoon so we had a nice lunch her garden. Then back to some more 'work'.
We worked on some Digitizing.. I have Bernina Software V5 and Anne has V6.  and we found out how to do 'Cross Stitch' using the software. - Fabulous!!
Really quite easy when you know how.
Got some homework to do now.
